28/03/2012 · Final CAS Reflection Essay ..

For my third and final piece I chose a paper I wrote my junior year in Accelerated English and later incorporated into blog writings. It is entitled “An Uncertain Reflection”. I selected this piece because it deals with how I see myself, especially as a teenager. At this point in my life, I’m discovering who I am and watching myself change on a regular basis. This essay was a big step for me and my writing. It was the first time I sat down and seriously entertained the question “Who Am I?”

What is a reflection paper? To put it simply, a reflection paper or essay is something that reflects your insights, opinion, or observation. You could quote once in a while but the essay should not be entirely what other people think about the subject. Like other types of essays, it should have an introduction (thesis statement), body and conclusion (judgment and summary).

Aside from the introduction and a narration or description of the subject, a reflection paper should also have a judgment, a conclusion, etc. It is usually in the latter part of the essay. Since it is a reflection essay, it should be your own words and how you exactly perceive things. It should state your personal insight, which makes it different from other types of essay.

To make it easy for you (considering that you already have a subject), you can start by describing the big picture in the introduction. There is no rule on how you should write the introduction but it is best to give them an idea – a general statement – that prepares them for the body of your reflection paper. Be sure to include your thesis statement in the introduction. It is the statement that sums up the entire essay.

CAS Blog 2011/12: CAS Final Reflection Essay

My last piece, an original short story I composed, is the shortest work I have in my portfolio at just under a page and yet I can truthfully say that it was not composed in 20 minutes. I originally wrote it for my Turkish class, and then adapted it into English for my blog, adding to it where I felt it was underdeveloped; I took it to the writing center at my school, and worked on it with a teacher there, after which I had in my mind an idea of what was working and what wasn’t working as well. In my next edit I tried to unify the voice throughout the piece. In my final read-through I looked for areas where I had implied what I didn’t mean. I added, took out, and replaced passages until I was satisfied enough to send it off to Miami. The original Turkish version of my storyhas an interesting background: The teacher in class wrote about ten words givenby students on the board, and asked us to compose a piece of writing using thesewords. Hence, I believe this short story demonstrates my ability to thinkcreatively and join different concepts together into a cohesive piece. Even thoughI did end up choosing this piece to put in the portfolio from among other alternatives, it may have some disadvantages. Firstly, it means all of the pieces I chose were composed within the last two years, which may be a disadvantage, considering showing my development as a writer could have been important. (I had considered submitting a story I wrote when I was about 7 for my writer’s choice, but decided it was too risky). Secondly, the piece is prose, and knowing that other pieces I considered included spoken word poetry etc., they could havehad more of an effect in showing my ability to write in different genres. Howeverknowing how much effort I have put into this piece I chose, I am confident that Ihave reflected my voice and my style.

For my second piece, that is my analysis of a text, I chose to translate andadd to a piece I had written for my Turkish class in which I discussed a shortstory by a famous Turkish author in order to determine the mindset of an author. I chose this essay keeping in mind that it could be beneficial to the reader toknow that I am capable of not only writing in but researching in multiple languages. After all, university level work can sometimes call for utilization of information sources which are not accessible to all. I also wanted to show that Iam capable of referencing my claims back to the text I am working on, and so I wanted to either write an essay about something which I had read recently, or asis the case with the essay I finally chose, something which I had written with the text being available to me at the time. The story is of the narrator who himself goes about writing a short story about a man he observes in a beer house. Once I had translated the essay, I went about adding to it in places where I felt it was lacking conformity to the criteria. I started to think how I could extract the conclusions I had drawn from the text to a larger context, and so started researching the author of the text’s literary identity. Once I had pinpointed his style of writing - i.e Anton Checkhov style impressionism -. , I turned my essayinto one which tried to link the short-story-writing methodology of this Turkish author’s character to the methodology of authors which follow Checkhov in his style. Of my concerns about my analysis is that I “read into the text” in places in order to fit my thesis. While this thought may be baseless, it is still worrying to think I may have subconsciously translated the Turkish quotes inaccurately in order to support a thesis which is flawed, even if only slightly. On a more technical note, as with many of my writings, I am concerned that my arrangement of words is too complicated and my use of explanatory dashes or parentheses too excessive; I do also consider that this may just be Turkish academicism affecting my voice, as academics do tend to opt for long words and sentences.

To ensure that you will write the right type of essay, it is also important that you know what it is not. For instance, a reflection paper is not a piece composed of mixed thoughts of other people. No matter how well known the people you will quote, you will end up with a failing grade as this type of essay requires your own thoughts.
